So I have the possibility of an internship in New York during the summer, but I’m not sure how to find housing. My problem is that I would be using money from a scholarship, which is not distributed until the end of March. It seems like most dorms want money upfront and in full, and by the time I get the scholarship money, these dorms won’t have vacancies. There’s not a way that I can get the money before that. Do I have any other options?

I’m a current Columbia student and I also applied for a ton of magazine internships this summer, but I just want to let you know that Columbia does rent out its dorms over the summer, and I’m almost sure that whole process hasn’t started yet. It starts in about March or April. Great location, pretty nice dorms.
What I did last year.
It is difficult. I went through this last summer.
What worked for me is finding a roommate for the summer over Craigslist. There were hundreds of different set ups, people, locations, price ranges, EVERYTHING to choose from and figure out. It’s hard when you aren’t in NY or close to it (as I was) so you might have to agree to live someplace without visiting it first (like seeing photos in emails, talking on the phone with the potential roommate) it works, I did it like that.
There is also housing through Columbia I think? NYU, too has some. Check out the universities in NYC and see if they have any summer programs. if they do, get in your application early because they fill up FAST.

I’m actually in the same situation. I’m looking into staying at either the NYU or Columbia dorms. Have you tried talking to your school’s financial aid department yet? I found out that mine makes exceptions towards scholarship disbursement for special circumstances (like this one). You have to state your claim in writing and submit a few references for verification. I’m going through the whole process right now.
