the inquiry email

Ok, so this may be a dumb question, because I’ve already had internships, but they’ve come from either references or Ed postings.

When you want to contact an EA to apply for a summer magazine internship, it’s pretty much assumed that they will be “hiring” for the season. So, do you send a short inquiry email first, or just send the cover letter with the resume? And if it’s better to send just an email first, what’s the appropriate thing to write? Should you try to include any qualifications in it (i.e. “I have previous magazine internship experience…”), or just ask in general about applying for internships?

Thanks!
