I’ve been working for a great book publishing company for the last 6 months. (The company’s great, but my boss is kinda psycho.)
Anyway, my current position is mainly administrative, but my background and interest is editorial. A new position opened in the editorial department
that is perfect.
I spoke to HR, who told me it’s not advisable to seek other opportunities until I have been with the company at least a year, but if I was serious about the position I could apply. The last thing I was told was that my time in my current position would be taken into consideration.
Should I apply anyway? And should I tell my boss I’m applying?
Or is applying for a job within the same company after only 6 months really a sin?
You should wait the year
You should wait the year out. Yeah, your boss is a psycho, but if you are applying for an internal position you will need his (and your co-worker’s) good word. Plus if he is a psycho chances are you aren’t the only one who knows it, so sticking with if for a year shows you are dedicated and determined. If the last thing they said was the time at your current position will be considered, that might be a bad thing. They won’t want to hire you for this new position if you are going to jump ship as soon as something better comes along. You have a reputation to keep up.
Never tell your current boss that you are applying for other jobs. You can maybe talk with them about what opportunities exist for you, or if they have any contacts that you can network through, but don’t tell them specifics about interviews, etc. Even if they are cool and supportive, it still makes it a little awkward.
It sounds like you want to apply though, so you probably already did. Good luck! Let us know what happens.
