Jobs before first magazine job

How negative is it to your resume/ chances of finding a magazine job if you take an administrative type job first, while looking for a magazine job, just to be able to pay the bills? Im only asking cuz Im about to graduate in May, and I need to get a job asap after that for financial reasons, and Im getting really scared by the lengths of time it seems to be taking many people on here to get a magazine related job. Does it look bad to have a nonjournalism job on your resume? Thanks

no worries

Most job experience looks good. Chances are, with an entry-level job, you will be doing a lot of administrative work anyway, so having that experience listed on your resume can only help you. And many non-journalism jobs require skills that are relevant to the job you want (leadership skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to work well under pressure, communication skills). It’s all how you spin it.

If you can, while you are doing the administrative job, find a publication to freelance for or a blog to contribute to. Or start your own blog. Make sure to use this time to build a portfolio, so you have more to talk about in your mag interviews.

Best of luck!
