Shady Internships

OK Kids! I just want to give you the rundown about internships. When you go in for an interview and there isn’t one and you just start interning. Just leave. They are basically using you as a body. They need a sucker to do stuff in the fashion closet or the showroom. Cleaning offices, picking up the editorial assistants slack, (i.e.-They lost leather pants on a photo shoot and they blame the intern.) Ask the right questions. Is there room for growth? What happened to the last intern? One place where I interned the girl I replaced just stopped showing up. It makes you wonder. Just be smart. Choose wisely. Make sure it’s a one hand washes the other deal. Good luck.

wow, i totally agree

I went on an “interview” for an internship at a website. I was super-excited; I traveled into the city from Long Island (taking off of my current job to do so). I got there after an extremely long morning, and when I arrived I sat down with someone for approximately 10 minutes. I received and email two or three days later telling me that after “careful consideration” they decided to hire me for the internship. I was again super-excited considering I have been on this mission lately to get a foot-in-the-door experience within the business. However, I thought it strange that they needed careful, or any consideration for that matter seeing as though she sat with me for ten minutes.? Anywho, I turned down an offer at a job on Long Island, and switched my shifts at a current job to take the position. I went that Friday to the city to intern at the website and all went well. I got a call the following Tuesday, twas the lady who hired me, and had regretted to inform me that I wasn’t needed anymore, and that the other intern was going to be full time. WOW! She explained that this has never happened before at their company and that it wasn’t at all a reflection of my work the previous Friday. I thought 1.) how unprofessional, and 2.) you bet your a** it wasn’t a reflection of how I work; it was a 6 hour day where you sat me at a computer for 80% of the time.
So be careful of ‘shady internships’ and yes! if the interview is short, get out!
