Name vs. Experience?

Quick question.

I’m looking at two great publications through a program at my school. Both are the same company. One is very similar to where I’d eventually like to work - a great name, but less hands-on work for me. One is another good name, smaller circulation, but a lot more opportunities for pitching, clips (and a better overall attitude, or so I’ve heard.)

So my question is: Do I go for the glitzy name on my resume, or do I aim for a good name and the potential for clips? My dad is convinced it’s all about the name, but I’m worried I won’t be able to compete with the atmosphere.

i agree- do both. my

i agree- do both.
my internship at a small publishing company impressed some, while my big name internship impressed others.

Why not both?

I think editors like to see that you have real editorial experience, and not just fetching coffee experience, but when you’re applying for an EA spot that hundreds of other candidates have applied for, the truth is, editors will scan your resume quickly, so you need one-word, bold-faced attention grabbers, like “GLAMOUR,” and not like “pitched and wrote stories for Little Known, an up and coming women’s lifestyle magazine.”

Then again, if you’ve spoken to past interns at the bigger name magazine, and they hated the place and didn’t walk away with clips or other relevant experience, then it may not be worth your time.

If you’re not in your last semester, I’d say do both internships. That way you have the big name on your resume and the experience.

i completely understand how you feel! i am from london, and last year i interned at intersection magazine (almost unknown here). at this internship i learned a lot of things and got to style a photoshoot and be featured on the masthead. also, the fashion editor i worked for is still calling me from time to time to assist him at photoshoots etc. it was a lot more useful than my internship at national newspaper the guardian, where i was answering the phone, my name wasn’t anywhere and after my two weeks i didn’t even get a reply to my emails from the people i was working with. whan i’m trying to say is that the guardian will look good on my cv, but with intersection i actually learned and had a broad range of experiences that i will treasure forever. if i had to decide which one was the best, i’d say intersection, no doubt.
