When to give up?

I am a recent grad, and by recent I mean its only been 2 weeks, and i jut finished a great internship in nyc. I am currently in NYC and on the job hunt. I am looking for a photo job, and its becoming very depressing. I guess I am saying this b/c I got my internship fairly easy (i was called 20 mins after my interview), so I guess what I am asking how do I change my job searching approach, b/c photo job are all about who you know in NYC. And when should I pull the plug and move back home?? This is so hard..college was easy compared to this!
Any advice? Also, I really don’t want to do another internship b/c it seems like a waste, and I need money :(

Also try journalismjobs.com,

Also try journalismjobs.com, Columbia’s J-school has a J-Jobs site that is updated daily, as do lots of the other bigs j-schools. Try indeed.com (it searches a lot of the standard sites like Monster, etc.). spd.org might have some. Why don’t you also look into scheduling info interviews at some mags/pubs you’re interested in? It never guarantees a job, but it’s a good way to make connections and if you make a good impression, maybe they’ll think of you when something opens up. I say if you really want to make it in the city, stick out as long as you can, financially. Pick up a temp job or part-time job waitressing or something. Just don’t give up too soon.
Maybe consider something tangentially related, too. I want to be an editor but took a job as a reporter because I just needed something to get my foot in the door. (Not sure what a photog/design equivalent of that might be though).
Again, best of luck

Don't give up - you've just started

Two weeks is not nearly enough time to throw in the towel.
Search for the photo job of your dreams, but also search for something that will help you pay rent. If you’ve got to work in retail, dog sit, wait tables, whatever, do what you need to do to be where you want to be.

Worked for me.

Haha! I just realized that

Haha! I just realized that the default on this new message board automatically uses the first few words of the text as the subject line, so my last subject on this thread says “suck it.”

The posts you have on your site are always so enjoyable to read. I also like how you have your website designed. Good work and I will be returning often. Agree w/ IheartMags, suck it

Agree w/ IheartMags, suck it up! I know people out there that didn’t get their first jobs until a year (or more!) after graduation. Two weeks is nothing, my friend. (Not trying to be mean, just rational.)

Hi - okay - #1 like you said it has ONLY been 2 weeks… so in the nicest way possible - get a grip. #2 just because you finished your internship doesn’t mean you should shut the door. Go back there… tell them you are looking for a job and ask if anyone could point you in the right direction - or ask if they would consider having you as a paid intern - or ask who you worked with if they know anyone else in the field that needs an assistant… throw things out to everyoneeeeeee especially those people at that internship - dont walk away until you have sucked up all your resources there first. get their contact info. emails, etc. and #3 you asked if you should change your job search technique but fail to mention what your job search technique is. if it is freaking out after just 2 weeks and already chucking it up to “what do I do, it’s all who you know” then clearly, you are on the wrong track. if you have that outlook from now - you’re going to have the “woe is me, pity me whyd i choose this career” attitude and it will only bite you in the ass. Brush your shoulders off - get out, pound the pavement and get hired.
Congrats on your graduation, and welcome to the field :)

Definitely try and hold out.

Definitely try and hold out. I’m in your exact same position (except make it three weeks for me). It’s horribly depressing, but it’s how the world works. A lot of places take a while to process your apps and stuff too, I think. I am wondering the same thing.. how long can I make it before I have to give up and go home because I can’t even pay rent. Just tough it out. Try temping for the time being. I’m trying to do that (although I can’t get any of those places to even call me back either, but my roommate did, so I know it can be done). Try to stay positive because the job search process SUCKS! Good luck.

ok so thanks for the

ok so thanks for the “reality checks”, some of them were a little harsh, haha, but its a reasonable question, when do you stop? I should make it clear that I am not in the magazine/journalism field I am in photography/art field trying to get into a photo department at a magazine, or in production, or a photo agency/studio…so things are a little different, I am running out of places to apply, so thats what I mean about changing my search options. I do the whole craigslsit, media bistro, NYFA Classified, thing, so I guess I am asking does anyone know of other places to look? Thanks everyone who responded.

I’ve been out of school

I’ve been out of school for 5 years, and what I’ve learned most about the Journalism/Magazine field is it all comes down to tenacity. Yes, connections help, but it is so competitive out there that even connections only get you so far. I didn’t get a mag job for well over a year after I graduated. I graduated in ‘02 right after 9/11. It was tough. But if this is your dream, you have to be patient and keep at it. Here is another website that is helpful: http://www.americasjobexchange.com/seeker/jobsearch/quick.
Also, Indeed.com is useful. Atrium Staffing is a great temp agency-Conde’ uses them. Good luck, and yes, being out in the real world is a lot harder than college! Watch Reality Bites and you’ll feel better.
