Hello every one I’m new to ED2010. I’ve been reading so many postings/messages and have been inspired in so many ways. I’m not a writer or want to become one, as you can see I’m not very good at it. Where I can defend my own is in graphic design. I would like to get into the magazine industry as a designer but don’t have a clue where to start. I’m currently attending SMC Academy entertainment and technology. I’ve submitted a few resumes but no luck yet. If you have any advice please pass it along it would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not a designer, so I can’t offer any mag design advice, but you might check out The Society of Publication Designers. I have a friend who is a mag designer and was talking about doing some events with them, so that might be a good way to network and stuff. Not sure if it will help, but thought I’d throw it out there if you’ve never heard of it. (spd.org)

Yeah, SPD is a great
Yeah, SPD is a great resource … they’re in the midst of starting more stuff for students/beginners, so keep an eye on their website. There will be an event soon with various panelists talking about what art directors do and how to get there, and there will be portfolio reviews and magazine office tours coming up this fall/winter. And they have some other seminars also, so watch for those.
As for being a mag designer … what kind of jobs are you applying to? As an entry-level, you should be looking for art/design/photo assistant positions, as well as low-level designer positions.
Your portfolio should show a lot of editorial-design … doesn’t have to be an actual-published piece, you can show classwork or personal projects. But they’re going to want to see magazine/editorial-related stuff … if all you have is logos and packaging and posters, it’s going to be hard to break in.
Also, play up anything editorial-related on your resume … even if you designed the newsletter for your dorm, list that. Show that you are familiar with designing/producing editorial things. If you’re still in school, work on the school magazine/newspaper/yearbook/newsletters, etc.
