My question is about resume format. I’ve just discovered from a friend who works as an editor at a major newspaper that my resume format is not the kind most journalists use.
I’m annoyed about this because my resume format was the traditional kind, but then when I interned at a magazine in New York, my supervising editor changed it.
That was four years ago. After she changed my resume format, it took me another year and a half to get a full-time job. I’m wondering now if the resume format had anything to do with that. I struggled to make ends meet, lived off an inheritance from my dad’s untimely death, and had to take another unpaid internship before I got that first job. After that job, I took a job as an editor of medical journals and hated it, but it was the only job I could get and I couldn’t afford to live in New York anymore.
Is it possible that a resume format could make employers not consider you? And how could I go for four years without knowing this, just because I trusted one editor?
I have great editing experience on my resume … my medical editing job was very difficult and I also used to edit and write for the Associated Press. It doesn’t make any sense to me that I’m having such a hard time finding work after all that.

Yes, the format does help
Yes, the format does help HR/hiring managers quickly scan your resume, but the differences you described are so minor, I highly doubt it would have hurt your chances at the jobs you were applying for. As long as the place of employment and your job title are there and fairly easily read, it’s fine. In fact, your current version sounds exactly like mine and I’ve had no trouble getting jobs (I’m 7 years into my career, have had 5+ jobs, always the same resume format.)
I would suggest, however, adding back the computer skills category … but only list the relevant programs … if all you really know is Word and Internet Explorer, then you’ll look better without that. But if you have experience with Quark or InDesign or Photoshop or database systems, etc, definitely list that in a separate section.
Education should go after your jobs since you’re no longer in school, and I’d put honors in a separate category, but only if they’re career-related … if they are honors from school (like Dean’s list, or scholarships, etc), then yes, keep them with school (if you keep them at all). But if they are from outside of school, you can list them separately. Just remember though to make sure the info is relevant … if you have a long list of scholarships or awards you won in college, that doesn’t really mean much to the typical NYC hiring manager and it’s going to make you look less professional.
thanks -- good advice
Thanks. I do know Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop, so I may add the computer skills section back to my resume.
The award was in college, so I guess it is okay to keep it under education. It’s good to hear that the format change wouldn’t have made too much of a difference. I got rather worried that it made a big difference when a friend who works at a newspaper showed me hers. Perhaps newspaper resumes just look different? That editor might have done me a favor if she was just preparing me to get magazine work.
These days I’m looking more for newspaper work though … after three years looking for magazine jobs, I’m worn out. I’m going to try the long way (writing for newspapers first).
resume format
From my experience, how your resume looks does have a lot to do with whether editors take the time to really go through it. I’ve seen editors take 15 secs to scan resumes, which absolutely seems unfair when you consider how much time you probably spent making it perfect but that’s how it goes.
Is your resume not specific enough to each job you’re applying to? I always try to tweak my resume a bit to highlight different things depending on what editors say they’re looking for in the job listing. Is it too general? Too specific? I always try to keep my resume at one page and describe what type of publication I work for. You could always look at your cover letter too. We always get mass e-mails with form letters addressed to “Sir or Madam” and most editors just delete them because they figure why read it when obviously this person didn’t take the time to write a personalized cover letter.
But even if you do all these things, it’s so hard to get that one big break. Don’t worry if it hasn’t happened to you yet. You just have to keep trying and ask others for advice about your resume (like Ed). Wish you the best of luck!
thanks, but still help
Hi, thanks for replying. I do all the things you mentioned. I never write “sir or madam” and there is nothing wrong with the content of my resume. It’s just the format that is different.
For example, when I left college, I used bullet points, and put lots of spaces between things, so they would be more visible.
Like this:
ED2010
Worked as yada yada yada yada yada …….. June 2002- etc.
When the magazine editor changed my resume, she made it look like this:
ED2010: (June 2002-etc.) Worked as yada yada yada yada ……………………………………………….
and on like that for a block paragraph. So the whole resume is one page of block paragraphs. It has no bullet points, no spaces between things, no dates off to the right margin like in my first example above.
I can see how it would take more focus to read it because all the information is jumbled together. But the editor insisted at the time that it was the right way to do it. She also had me combine my education and awards into one section, and she had me get rid of my computer skills because she said that would be obvious.
Am I an idiot for listening to this person?
resume
personally i do think the way a resume is formatted is really important, because its your first impression. you want to be clear, concise, and impressive. but that being said, i dont necessarily think the formatting of your resume alone would keep you from getting a job for that long. I think its easy to blame it on that looking back, but plenty of people with outstanding resumes are jobless for a long time too. however, i would think about changing the format. bullets are best, in my mind.
