Is it just me or is the pay shrinking faster and faster for freelance work? Are any other professional writers out there upset with how many writers are willing to work for free, or just for “exposure”?
I remember when the standard rate among top tier publications was $1.00 a word, and that was 20 years ago! Now it seems all these offers expect us to work for pennies on the dollar.
I know the internet has carved a hole into the print market and print is suffering, but what makes internet sites think they can offer such low ball rates to writers? Aren’t others out there frustrated, insulted and sick of it too? Why should they expect the same words I would write for print, to be paid only 1/4 of what print would pay…or even less?
Or are some of you just caving and following the wave of prostituting our writing for whatever we can get for it?
