Hi guys, looking for some advice. Assuming that some of you are in ed-ass jobs already (or have been there at some stage), wanted to know what your response would be if someone brought in a creative/self-promotional piece (resume) in an attempt to get noticed, but purely on spec. If there are no specific ed-ass jobs going at the time, would it get thrown away, no matter how impressive or original… or would the ed-ass think to pass it on to the editor with future jobs in mind?

A friend of mine a while back got hired as an EA after she sent in her resume to the managing editor when there were no positions open. You’ll still need to write a cover letter saying what you’re looking for. But you’re probably better off sending in a regular resume than a “creative self-promotional piece.” If you’ve got great experience, you’ll get called in. If you don’t, and you send in something super creative, you still may get called in, but you won’t get any jobs.
Ditto
I say definitely send in a coverletter and resume. And do be creative. I sent in my resume to a senior editor for an entry level job I really wanted without notification that there was a spot available. Turns out there wasn’t, but the editor did get back to me and offered to do lunch. So yeah, I’m a proponent of sending your resume cold (or however you would term that.) You never know what it can lead to.
hard copies or emails?
Are you sending hard copies of your resumes or emailing them?
