I have been interning at an independent, but somewhat well-known, magazine for the past 3 months. Even though the position is an unpaying internship, I have been on the masthead for the past 2 issues as an “Editorial Assistant.” The September issue has just come out and I have been “promoted” on the masthead to “Associate Editor.” How would I put this on my resume? Right now I just say I am an Editorial Intern. Should I leave it at that, or can I specify the position they give me on the masthead even though it’s still unpaying?

I’d say go right ahead and list the highest position you can claim—you’re legitimately listed as an associate editor on the masthead. I had one of those intern/EA gigs once (seems common at small, independent magazines) and made sure to call it an EA job on my resume.
