Internships without clips?

Hi,

I’m relatively new to this site/industry, so I apologize in advance if this sounds like the naive or oft-repeated question that I suspect it is. But I was wondering, what are the chances of acquiring a magazine internship if you don’t have publishing experience while in college? I was the editor-in-chief of my high school paper, but I’m not sure if that counts… anyone got any tips?

I think it’s certainly

I think it’s certainly possible, but you have to be realistic.
You can’t expect to land a highly competitive internship at a huge magazine with no college writing experience.
However, there are TONS of magazines out there, so just aim for some smaller ones and sell yourself well and explain why you stopped writing and why you’re ready to get back in.
And I’m sure you’re aware, but a lot (altho not all) of unpaid internships involve more administrative than editorial stuff anyway, so it could be a good way to ease you back into the world of journalism.

Internship, No Clips

Hey,

I was in the same boat, editor of my high school paper, no experience in college. Summer after graduation, I got an internship at a national arts & entertainment pub with no real clips to speak of. Just be interesting. You can send a writing sample from wherever you want, just make sure it’s you at your best.

(P.S., I’m new here too)
