I know the six-month internship at Prevention in Emmaus, Pa., often comes with the opportunity for good research and clips. I interviewed for it but withdrew my name because of another offer, and the people and work sounded great — and the woman I interviewed with flipped through a copy of the magazine with me and pointed out all of the clips the current intern was getting.
Plus, the internship pays something approaching a living wage — only about $11 or $12 an hour, but you can get an apartment in the area for about $350 or $400 a month.
Men's Health
The six-month Men’s Health editorial internship will get you a ton of clips… virtually all your responsibilities will be researching, reporting, and writing, things like bulletins, sidebars for features, etc. They really rely heavily on the interns for a lot of content. You also have abundant opportunities to pitch your own ideas and see them make it into the magazine. Coffee runs and photocopying are very limited, as is fact-checking work (unless you want to do it!). It’s a lot of work, but you learn a ton and it will definitely pay off, especially if you want to be a health editor—whether for a women’s or men’s mag.
