Dear Ed,
I’m interning at a magazine where the editors get to choose three Fridays before Labor Day to take the day off. How do I know if I get the same vacation days?

Dear Edit Intern,
Benefits given to full-time employees—sick days, vacation days, and personal days—don’t tend to apply to part-time help, including temps and interns, unfortunately. So don’t plan any three-day-weekends on the beach yet! Usually, if an intern is entitled to summer Fridays, your supervisor will let you know the policy. If you know other interns on staff are getting Fridays off, it could be worth asking your supervisor what the deal is. Be prepared, though—it may be a departmental thing, which is why the fashion intern gets the day off and you, Ed’s edit friend, have to stay in the office. There is an exception: If, instead of full days off, your office closes early, say at 2:00, every Friday in the summer, this probably applies to interns too. Some Edvice: Even if most people around you are running to the elevators at 2, finish whatever work you have to do, and then ask your supervisor if it’s okay if you head home.
Love,
Ed
