Dear Ed,
I’m considering getting a small tattoo on the top of my foot. Since it may be visible in interview outfits (such as when I wear a skirt with heels), could it hurt my chance of getting a job in magazines?
Thank you!

Dear Brittany,
Editors want to hire candidates who are not only qualified and personable, but also professional-looking. Getting an “NKOTB 4eva” tattoo across your forehead may compromise how professional you look; a small tattoo on your foot shouldn’t, especially if it’s something innocuous enough like a flower or a butterfly. There are plenty of successful editors with tattoos (though none that Ed knows of with NKOTB markings).
But if you’re set on getting one, and are worried about how an editor may perceive it, don’t show it off on your first meeting. Just wear dark tights, or pants and socks, on your interviews. Letting it be visible probably won’t affect your chances, but why gamble on it? Wait to show it off until after you’ve gotten the job and worked for a few days.
Love,
Ed
