What should I major in to work in the art department?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I would really like to work on the layout of a fashion magazine.
What should my major be if I want to be an art director or designer one day: Visual Communication, Graphic Design, or something else? Also, what should I do now, while I’m in high school, to prepare.
Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Ashlie,

Most art directors start out as designers, so majoring in graphic design would be a great way to go. Taking classes or minoring in visual communication is a good idea, too. For now, try working on your high school’s newspaper or yearbook laying out pages or taking photos. Then apply for internships in magazine art departments once you get to college.

Love,
Ed
