Dear Ed,
I would really like to work on the layout of a fashion magazine as an art department assistant, a designer, and eventually, an art director. But I’m stuck on a few things: What should my major be?
Visual communication, graphic design, or something else? Also, what can I do now, while I’m in high school, to prepare? Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Ashlie,
Most art directors start out as designers, so majoring in graphic design would be a great way to go. Taking classes or minoring in visual communication is a good idea, too. For now, try working on your high school’s newspaper or yearbook laying out pages or taking photos. Then apply for internships in magazines’ art departments once you get to college. You can also attend a panel on 2/12 sponsored by the Society of Publication Designers. For more info, go here: http://spdstudents.blogspot.com.
Love,
Ed
