How should my resume be designed?

Dear Ed,

Is it a good idea to have my resume designed by a graphic designer? Do resumes that don't look like they were made in Word impress an employer, or do they turn them off and make the person sending the resume look arrogant?

Absolutely not. Your resume shouldn't be designed at all. I know it's tempting, but your resume should be simple to read in Microsoft Word (or even better, created in MS Word and saved as a pdf file); so every person you send it to, no matter how crappy their computer (or their computer aptitude) is, they can open it and read it on screen without needing special fonts or any programs. This is one place you can be boring and uncreative while looking for a job. It's very annoying to get designed resumes in fancy fonts. Plus, it looks very green and juvenile.

Glad you asked!

Best of luck, Ed
