How should I present my clips?/What magazines are in LA?

Hi Ed,

I’ve been fortunate enough to have gained a good amount of published clips from my internship/editorial assistant position. I’m now searching for a full-time editorial job (there doesn’t seem to be a lot of those in Los Angeles, where I live), but I haven’t the slightest clue how to organize and present my writing samples. Should each clip have the cover of the issue in which it appeared attached to it? Do I just make color copies and put them in a binder? I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks,
Emily, Los Angeles, CA

How should my resume be designed?

Dear Ed,

Is it a good idea to have my resume designed by a graphic designer? Do resumes that don't look like they were made in Word impress an employer, or do they turn them off and make the person sending the resume look arrogant?

Is interviewing with a male editor different?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

It seems that most of the editors people interview with are women. I’m interviewing with a male editor—is there anything I should do differently?

Thank you,

Dear Dennis,

Isn't an internship enough?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I recently applied for an editorial assistant position. I was called in for an interview, but was told I don’t have enough
experience for the EA job, but they wanted to consider me for an unpaid internship. I’m a recent graduate with a degree in Journalism, I’ve already done an internship, and I have clips. Is that not enough anymore?

ASK ED: Answers to your magazine questions

Dear Ed:

I just graduated from college and I am having trouble
finding my first job in magazines—I’ve been looking for months!!!!
I’m considering going to graduate school for journalism, but it’s
a lot of money and I want to make sure it’s the right decision for my
career. What do you think? Should I apply?

Should I temp?

Dear Ed,

Is working as a temp a good way to land a full-time editorial assistant
job?

Thanks,

Dear Samantha,

Shouldn't I be paid minimum wage for my internship?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I recently graduated from college and took an unpaid internship (well they pay a travel stipend of $50 every two weeks). A friend who works in human resources said that my company should be paying me minimum wage since I am no longer receiving college credit for the internship. Is this correct? I feel like I’m already getting taken advantage of by the industry and I want others to know what the deal is so they don’t get stuck in a situation like mine.

Thanks,
J in Missouri

What do I do after a bad evaluation?

Ed head

Dear Ed,
I just completed a semester-long internship at a big, local publication. I arrived early, never missed a day, got along with everyone in the office, pitched ideas, and was even featured in the mag. I wasn’t supposed to read my end-of-internship evaluation, but curiosity got the best of me, and I read it…

What do I do if I sent a cover letter with a typo?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I accidentally had a typo in my cover letter, and I realized it
the moment after I sent it off—and it’s pretty easy to detect. Is there any way to cover for this? Would a “sorry about that” e-mail just make things worse? Ed, help me with some damage control!

Dear Megan,

What if I don't have a job by graduation?

Ed head

Hi Ed. I am graduating in May and am freaking out about it. Like everyone else, I am planning on moving to New York after graduation. I know that for posted, specific job openings, my best bet would be to apply to such only when I am living in NY and ready to start work.

A mentor at a recent internship, however, told me that the HR department of many publishing companies (Hearst, Condé Nast, etc.) conduct 'introductory' interviews, and that she eventually got her current job as an editorial assistant through these interviews.

Could I (or should I) send my resume out to these HR departments now in hopes of obtaining such and interview, or do I have to wait until I graduate to do this, too?

2.) Also, what is the best way to contact the West Coast branches of New York-based magazines concerning available jobs out there? Would it be best for me to go through the NY office or to the CA address listed in the masthead? Again, when would be the right time to send these resumes—now or later?

Thank you so so much for your help. Your website has taught me everything I needed to know about getting and landing internships, and I am going to pray it does the same for me in the absolutely terrifying process of job-hunting.

What should an internship cover letter look like?

Dear Ed,

Can you give an example of a kick ass cover letter
for an internship?

What should I major in to become a magazine editor?

Ed head

Aloha Ed,

I’m currently in high school and my dream is to work in the magazine industry. My all-time favorite magazine is FOAM. It’s the perfect fit for me as I would love to work for a California-based magazine. When I get to college, what should I major in if I want to work in magazines? Also, I don’t JUST want to write; I want to be involved in promotions and events. What do they look for when they hire? I always wondered if, after having an internship with a magazine, do they consider hiring you? Thanks a lot!

What should I major in to work in the art department?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I would really like to work on the layout of a fashion magazine.
What should my major be if I want to be an art director or designer one day: Visual Communication, Graphic Design, or something else? Also, what should I do now, while I’m in high school, to prepare.
Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Who do I address my cover letter to if there's no contact name?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I know that one should always address a cover letter to an actual person, even if the contact’s name isn’t mentioned in the job posting. But how can one go about obtaining a name if the posting also states “no calls,” or if the posting doesn’t even list the publication’s name?

Why can't I get an internship?

Dear Ed,

I am a junior at a prestigious arts and communications
school in Boston.

I have dreamed my whole life of becoming a fashion
editor, but lately I feel that my dreams will never come to fruition.

Why does it always come down to me and someone else for a job?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I’ve gotten to second interviews three times already, but each time, I was rejected and told it came down to me and the other candidate. Why does this keep happening? Can I ask the editors what I could have done differently? How can I make myself the standout candidate?

Thanks,
Erica, New York City

Dear Erica,

Oh, Ed feels your pain! The same happened to him as many times, but guess what? He eventually got offered a gig that was exactly right for him—and he’s sure the same will happen for you.

Will my non-editorial jobs hurt my chances?

Ed head

I have been out of college since 2002 and I have yet to find an editorial job. I have done freelance writing/editing since 2001 but have not landed that full-time job that I desire. I have taken a lot of customer service jobs over the years until I found that editorial job that I desired. But will all of these positions hurt my chances at getting an editorial job now? Also, have I been out of school too long to get entry-level positions
at this point?

Thanks,
