Welcome

About Ed on Campus at West Virginia University

Ed on Campus at West Virginia University started their chapter in 2007, when News-Editorial student Karen Snyder (now Karen Duke!) was tipped off during an unsuccessful job interview. Snyder, now an Editorial Assistant at Parents Magazine, kicked off the club with a bang, bringing in WVU Alum and Everyday with Rachael Ray EA Courtney Balestier and Ed founder Chandra Czape Turner to speak with club members. Since that first year, WVU Ed on Campus has continued to grow, recently receiving the 2010 award for Best Established Chapter in large part because they incorporate volunteering into their events. They look forward to holding more great events this year that will hopefully bring them one step closer to becoming magazine editors in New York City. You can also out our nifty webpage here.

Meetings & Events

Meetings:

We meet every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in 102 Martin Hall on WVU’s Main Campus.

Confirmed Event:

November: We plan to visit the offices of Racer X Illustrated, a local motocross magazine. Managing editor Bryan Stealey has agreed to give the group a tour of the office and sit down for a Q&A session about the publication of the magazine.

More event ideas:

October: T-shirt sale, which will raise funds that will be used toward a trip to a major city like New York or D.C. in the Spring 2011 semester.

Movie-watching parties: next up, The September Issue.

Resume Workshop: We also hope to host resume workshops that will be open to all students in WVU’s School of Journalism.

Our past success!

In the last year, WVU Ed on Campus has grown to have a larger presence within the university. We have held a number of fundraisers to help fund activities for the club, and we have worked to raise several hundred dollars to help cancer research as part of Relay for Life. Fun activities included a movie night complete with snacks and a showing of The Devil Wears Prada. We hosted Nikki Bowman, editor-in-chief of WV Living, as she gave a speech during Mountaineer Week about the importance of regional magazines. After, Bowman joined us for an intimate dinner, answering students’ questions and giving advice on how to start a magazine from scratch.

We also took a trip to Washington, D.C. to speak with Ken DeCell of Washingtonian Magazine. While in D.C., we made an appearance at a WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism Alumni Banquet, representing the student body and mingling with successful alumni from the university. We also stopped at the Newseum and examined displays devoted to all aspects of journalism.
