Ed Congratulates Chapter of the Year: Boston

Boston Ed visits NYC

Movie awards season may be winding down, but Ed has an award of its own to share. And the Ed City Chapter of the Year is… drumroll please…Boston!

This chapter has been a dynamic addition to the Ed family since its founding in 2007, hosting magazine swaps, happy hours, and even field trips, with founder Courtney McClellan, working tirelessly to give Boston Edsters access to media opportunities both near and far. Not only does the group meet once a month to talk magazines, but they also frequently listen to guest speakers, head out as a group to see media industry movies like The September Issue, and even took a trip down to New York City in 2008 to spend the day speaking with editors from Marie Claire, Redbook, CosmoGirl!, and Good Housekeeping.

“All of the City Chapters are great!” says Ed’s Deputy City Chapters Director Anna Davies. “This year, though, Boston exemplified how a chapter can connect editors and aspiring editors to each other, and really foster a community. They sometimes even holds meetings at a member’s house!”

The Boston chapter takes advantage of the city at large as well, inviting speakers, such as Jamie Coelho, assistant web editor at Boston magazine, and Tyler Balliet, founder and president of The Second Glass magazine, to talk about the industry. “Most of our members are just entering the field and are curious about what it takes to be a good editor,” says McClellan. “Listening to professionals with a wide variety of experience, talents, and lessons really benefits everyone.”

What’s up Boston’s sleeve for 2010? “We’re meeting Megan Lisagor, editor-in-chief of Improper Bostonian!” says McClellan. “We’ve never had an EIC speak with us before, so I’m really looking forward to her advice.” McClellan says she’s also in the early phases of planning another NYC trip to meet with some big-name editors. Ed has been uber-impressed with all 15 city chapters—they’ve all done some pretty amazing work in this tough economic climate. “Boston hasn’t shied away from the challenges facing our industry, and they’ve really created a community people can turn to during tough times,” says Davies.
