CHAT-WITH-AN-EDITOR RAFFLE FINE PRINT
In order to win a “Chat with an Editor,” a one-on-one meeting with a top-level editor, you must buy a raffle ticket. Ticket sales will not be granted to senior-level editors, or past or present interns or employees of Chatelaine. Tickets can be purchased at the Oct. 14 Ed2010 Happy Hour at The Duke of York between 6:00 p.m. and 8:29 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the event. No one person can buy more than 10 tickets to each raffle. On each ticket, you must write your full name, job title (if not employed, say “unemployed”), email address and phone number. Winners will be drawn at random at the Ed2010 Happy Hour at The Duke of York on Oct. 14, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. Tickets will also be sold in advance for $6 each. Advance tickets will be sold until 5 p.m. on the day of the event, and will be incorporated into tickets sold at the event. Contact Briony Smith at toronto@ed2010.com for details on purchasing tickets ahead of the Happy Hour event. You do not have to be present to win; we will contact you via your email address (so make sure you print clearly!). If you do not respond within 7 days to the e-mail announcing that you won, another winner will be drawn at random in your place. Ed2010 will send out an introductory e-mail to you and the editor, and exchange contact information, but will not make scheduling arrangements-that is the winner’s responsibility. Meetings are valid for 4 months after winning. In case of unforeseen circumstances, Ed2010 reserves the right to substitute the editor with whom the winner will meet. (But, seriously, that’s not going to happen. We just have to cover our butts.) We will provide winners with a gift certificate of $50 toward the cost of the meal; the winner is responsible for any additional costs.

What We've Done

HAPPY HOURS Every few months, students, interns, editors and editor-hopefuls meet at a local pub to mix ‘n’ mingle and talk about magazines. Members are encouraged to bring several copies of the magazine they work at as part of our Magazine Swap – everyone can walk away with a free magazine or two. Ed also hands out door prizes, which in the past have included free one-year subscriptions to magazines such as Elle Canada and The Walrus, and holds a Chat-With-an-Editor Raffles, where winners get a free meal with a top-level editor. Past raffle winners have met with editors from Canadian Living, Style at Home and Hello! Canada.

SPEAKER SERIES Hear magazine leaders talk about their careers, how they got to where they are and their advice for you at our Speaker Series, which has featured guests such as Sarah Fulford, editor-in-chief of Toronto Life, and editor and writer Kim Pittaway.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WEB EDITING, JUNE 17, 09 An all-star line-up of senior web staffers from some of Canada’s top magazine websites — Jen O’Brien from Chatelaine.com, Bryan Borzykowski from CanadianBusiness.com, Sharon Donaldson from CottageLife.com and Explore-mag.com, and Jennifer Villamere of CanadianLiving.com — shared how they got into the biz and gave advice on how to succeed in the online world.

RESUME WORKSHOP, JUNE 10, 08 The night kicked off with our panel of experts – Penny Caldwell, editor in chief of Cottage Life; Joe Chidley, editor-in-chief of Canadian Business; and Jenny Pruegger, HR, Transcontinental – answering questions on how to write a good resume. Afterwards, attendees had a chance to meet one-on-one with one of the panelists for an individual critique of their resumes.

About Us

Ed in Toronto

Ed has been hanging out in Toronto since 2002, when former Chatelaine editorial assistant Kim Shiffman discovered Ed New York and decided to start a chapter in her hometown. Kim moved on to become senior editor at Profit, and passed Ed duties on to current chapter host Corinna vanGerwen in 2007.

In 2008, Corinna (whose day job is senior design editor at Cottage Life) brought in two assistants to help Ed grow: Briony Smith, a freelance fashion and arts writer, plays assistant host, while Ann Meredith Brown, editor of Design Edge Canada, is the special events manager.

Together, the team brings Ed Toronto members Happy Hour mixers, Chat-With-an-Editor raffles, guest speakers and workshops, all with the aim to help young editors land their dream jobs.
