  • Katy is a proud Kansas Citian and a true Missouri Tiger who graduated in 2004 with a bachelor’s in magazine journalism from Mizzou. Katy and Ed met while in college, and it was love at first sight. Katy now works as a magazine editor for two regional publications in the Kansas City area (LV Mag and The Dot), and also works as a freelance writer and blogger for several publications. Spare time is a luxury, but it’s all about living the Ed2010 dream!

State of Kansas City's media

Local media landscape

Life in the Kansas City media scene is certainly never dull. The city is home to a surprising number of magazines, newspapers, alt weeklies and other publications — at last count, KC is home to more than 50 titles. Layoffs and cost-cutting are the current buzz words. The Kansas City Star is set to lay off another 150 employees, the latest in a series of lay-offs that have left the newspaper’s staff drastically reduced. Local magazines present a slightly different picture. Some are bursting with glossy ad pages, while others are scrambling to generate enough revenue for printing and other necessary costs. Although times are tough, the sheer amount of available product is inspiring, and leaves Kansas City poised to be a media front-runner for the region as the economy rebounds.

About Us

All About Ed2010-Kansas City

The KC chapter of Ed2010 was founded in late 2007 by Andrea Adkins and Katy Ryan. Andrea has since left the world of magazine publishing to take a position as the Economic Development Administrator for the City of Leavenworth, Kansas, and she’s sorely missed!
Katy is thrilled to plan and host local events, most of which are happy hours that allow for networking and conversation. Plans for the Kansas City chapter include hosting a panel discussion with local media experts, as well as a lecture series and more happy hours. There may even be some collaboration with other local media-related organizations, so stay tuned for more details!
