Meet Your Hostess
Corinna VanGerwen is a senior editor at Canada’s leading home decor magazine, Style At Home, for which she also writes a technology column and new tech blog called “Tech Style.”
When Corinna isn’t busy writing and editing, she finds time to manage her personal blog titled “Dream Job TK.”
How did you and Ed meet?
My high school friend, Kim Shiffman, was the original Toronto host. I came to her first event for moral support and have been hooked ever since.
What is your Ed chapter like?
Big. The Toronto e-mail list is nearly 200 strong and we have more than 100 people in our Facebook group.
Have you thrown any Ed events recently?
The last event we held was a resume workshop in June. It started with a panel discussion, and then each of our guest speakers (two EICs and an HR manager) gave one-on-one resume critiques to our members. You can find some of the panelists’ advice here: http://dreamjobtk.blogspot.com/2008/06/ed2010-toronto-rsum-workshop-what…
Are there any big events you’re currently preparing for right now?
Boy have we got plans! We just hired two more staff volunteers, Ann Brown and Briony Smith, who are helping the chapter grow. Briony is planning a happy hour for October 1st and Ann is putting together a special event for early November.
I’m also working on introducing Ed to the rest of Canada, and will soon be managing the new Canadian Ed website once ready.
How do you get the happy hour-goers chatting?
We ask everyone to bring copies of the magazine they work at. It helps break the ice a little. Plus, members get to go home with free magazines!
What magazines are in the Toronto area?
Toronto is home to a large number of magazines in Canada, so we see members from all sorts of titles, from consumer to trade to custom. Most of the people who attend our events work at Transcontinental or Rogers (two of the major publishers in this country), or are interns or students. We’ve seen editors from Canadian Living, Profit, Canadian Home Workshop, Shameless and Cottage Life, among many others.
