City Chapter Spotlight: Los Angeles

Meet your hostess
Whitney Friedlander broke into magazines as an intern at Los Angeles in 2002 after getting her degree in journalism. Now she keeps busy as the city editor for Citysearch’s L.A. Web site and a freelance researcher for Westways magazine, a AAA publication.

When Whitney isn’t working (or networking), she can be found exploring the local food scene, planning her next and “sometimes fictitious” travel adventure, researching popular culture, or snacking on Jelly Bellies.

How did you and Ed meet?
It was a hot summer night near the Santa Monica pier, a breeze blowing through my hair. Ed gave me a contact at Los Angeles, which helped me land my first internship. I was infatuated ever since.

What is your Ed chapter like?
Much like the city itself, L.A. Ed is an eclectic mix of full-time and freelance writers and editors. Some work from home, some in offices.

Have you thrown any Ed events recently?
L.A. Ed has done a lot of happy hours over the years. This time, we’re taking a tip from the NYC crew and are holding a panel on finding jobs in new media. It’s in a few weeks. Stay tuned to see how it goes!

How do you get the happy hour-goers chatting?
I try to find common ground that may not be work-related. “Been to any good restaurants lately?”

What are some of the big magazines/publications in your area?
Many of the big NYC magazines have smaller L.A. offshoots, or at least are looking for L.A.-based freelancers. But they might not always advertise. In L.A., it really is who you know.
