Hi Ed,
I’m a high school senior, and I am very interested in working for a teen fashion magazine like Seventeen or Teen Vogue. However, I am not sure what my major in college should be. I am interested in fashion and editorial. I was initially planning to major in communications and journalism, but I’m not sure, especially since these magazines often use freelance writers. What’s your advice? What’s the best major for this career goal?
Please help me Ed!
Sabrina
Hi Sabrina,
Thanks for writing Ed. Your college major matters less than the writing experience you get from your college newspaper, magazine, or yearbook. Many magazine editors majored in journalism, communications, English, creative writing, and the like, but there are many other editors who majored in subjects like history, French, and music, but they got relevant experience through their student publications and internships. If you’d specifically like to be a fashion editor, you can major in art or fashion merchandising, but simply taking classes in these subjects or interning in the fashion department of a magazine (or even starting a fashion blog!) will prepare you well for fashion editor positions.
Good luck!
