Yah, Ed’s got rules. Sure, they’re boring, but please read them closely and make sure before you apply that you meet every single requirement—and, who knows, maybe you’ll be able to afford a little chicken for your ramen while you’re here!
To Apply:
1) If you’re an undergrad, you must be at least a sophomore in college at the time you apply. Graduates must be out of undergrad for 24 months or less.
2) If you are picked to receive Ed’s Trust Fund, you must be able provide proof that you have an unpaid internship (in the form of a letter from the magazine’s internship coordinator on company letterhead or via company email) within 10 days of notification that you’ve be selected. Your internship must be at least 20 hours a week.
3) Your internship must be at a title recognized by the Magazine Publishers of America, and the office must be located in the five boroughs of New York City. Check at magazine.org for membership. Click on directories and do a search. If your magazine does not appear, call MPA or ask your magazine directly if they are a member.
4) Fill out the attached application. The application must be typed or word-processed. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.
5) Submit an essay in 500 words or less in which you describe “Your Dream Job at a magazine and Why?” Treat your essay as if you were writing an article or personal essay for a magazine, complete with a lede and a catchy hed and dek. (If you don’t know what those terms mean, check out Ed’s Glossary at ed2010.com.) The essays will be reviewed by the Ed Staff and will be judged in the following criteria: 75% passion for your dream magazine job and 25% creativity. You can, optionally, send as many as three writing samples. They will not be judged nor will they effect you chances of winning.
